Map service is Esri's proprietary software format for providing feature and imagery data layers. Map services are hosted by ArcGIS Servers and can be found and made available through ArcGIS Online.
Notes
Esri's Map service should not be confused with MapServer, which is an Open Source geographic data rendering engine.
