How to load grid values from a GeoShare WMS

When creating and using a Template Project, the inclusion of additional data is a common requirement. Vector-based data already offers a number of routes to import data both manually and automatically, reflective of the different ways the data can and should be interpreted. For grid data, the ideal route is connecting to an external WCS. However, it is possible to upload large grid datasets in the form of GeoTIFFs to the GeoShare and have their data included automatically in Projects generated based on a properly configured Template Project. Calculations based on this data can then be run automatically and without significant manual intervention.

Editor → Current Situation (Ribbon tab) → Geo Import (Ribbon bar) → Geo Share (Dropdown)

These instructions assume the desired GeoTIFFs are already uploaded to the GeoShare, ideally in a designated directory.

How to set up a Template Project to include grid data from the GeoShare automatically:
  1. Open the GeoShare, and navigate to the directory with the desired GeoTIFF file(s).
  2. Opt to create a Viewer, and add the desired GeoTIFF(s) to it.
  3. Click on the "edit" option of the newly created Viewer, and open the "WMS Link". This opens a page in the web browser.
  4. In the web browser, copy the address of the WMS link to the clipboard. This link will be required later.
  5. Ensure the intended Project is open in the Editor.
  6. Add a WMS Overlay
  7. Next to the WMS Overlay's "source", click on "select".
  8. Opt to add a new Source. This will open the New Source Wizard.
  9. Enter a name for the Source indicative of the content of the data.
  10. Complete the New Source Wizard, select the newly created source for the WMS Overlay, and confirm.
  11. Next to the WMS Overlay's "layer", click on "select".
  12. Select the layer matching the desired GeoTIFF.
  13. Set the result type of the WMS Overlay to "Grid Value (float32)".
