Certain weather data is required as input for the Heat Stress Module of the Heat Overlay. This weather data is used either directly (humidity) or as a means to translate to a value on a different level (wind speed).

This page contains a tutorial how to retrieve daily and hourly weather data for relevant days and UTC hours using historical KNMI weather data measured at weather stations.

Retrieve the correct weather data

First of all, an user has to determine what weather station should be used to retrieve the reference values for the hourly and daily weather related Heat Stress model attributes.

A geographical overview of the Dutch weather stations can be found here.

Once a valid weather station has been chosen, download the weather data from this location.

The KNMI Historical Weather data table

Once downloaded and unzipped, you can import the the downloaded weather data file using Microsoft Excel or a similar spread sheet program.

The KNMI weather data table is built up as follows:

2/B YYYYMMDD Date datum (YYYY=jaar,MM=maand,DD=dag)
3/C HH Hour tijd (HH=uur, UT.12 UT=13 MET, 14 MEZT. Uurvak 05 loopt van 04.00 UT tot 5.00 UT
4/D DD Degrees Windrichting (in graden) gemiddeld over de laatste 10 minuten van het afgelopen uur (360=noord, 90=oost, 180=zuid, 270=west, 0=windstil 990=veranderlijk. Zie [1]
5/E FH 0.1 m/s Uurgemiddelde windsnelheid (in 0.1 m/s). Zie [2]
6/F FF 0.1 m/s Windsnelheid (in 0.1 m/s) gemiddeld over de laatste 10 minuten van het afgelopen uur
7/G FX 0.1 m/s Hoogste windstoot (in 0.1 m/s) over het afgelopen uurvak
8/H T 0.1 °C Temperatuur (in 0.1 graden Celsius) op 1.50 m hoogte tijdens de waarneming
9/I T10 0.1 °C Minimumtemperatuur (in 0.1 graden Celsius) op 10 cm hoogte in de afgelopen 6 uur
11/J TD 0.1 °C Dauwpuntstemperatuur (in 0.1 graden Celsius) op 1.50 m hoogte tijdens de waarneming
12/K SQ 0.1 hours (=6 minutes) Duur van de zonneschijn (in 0.1 uren) per uurvak, berekend uit globale straling (-1 for <0.05 uur);
13/L Q J/cm2 Globale straling (in J/cm2) per uurvak;
14/M DR 0.1 hours (=6 minutes) Duur van de neerslag (in 0.1 uur) per uurvak

16/O RH 0.1 mm Uursom van de neerslag (in 0.1 mm) (-1 voor <0.05 mm)
17/P P 0.1 hPa Luchtdruk (in 0.1 hPa) herleid naar zeeniveau, tijdens de waarneming
18/Q VV m Horizontaal zicht tijdens de waarneming (0=minder dan 100m, 1=100-200m, 2=200-300m,..., 49=4900-5000m, 50=5-6km, 56=6-7km, 57=7-8km, ..., 79=29-30km, 80=30-35km, 81=35-40km,..., 89=meer dan 70km)
19/R N % Bewolking (bedekkingsgraad van de bovenlucht in achtsten), tijdens de waarneming (9=bovenlucht onzichtbaar)
20/S U % Relatieve vochtigheid (in procenten) op 1.50 m hoogte tijdens de waarneming
